The mission of VCU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is to maximize philanthropic support by engaging stakeholders with our institution working in partnership with all VCU schools, programs and campuses as one development and alumni relations community and implementing the best practices and efficient strategies to achieve a comprehensive development program.
The role of Director of Planned Giving will serve as the primary gift planning liaison for fundraisers on the MCV Campus, to oversee documentation of new and realized planned gifts, execute marketing and communications plans, and to develop and implement planned giving donor stewardship plans. This is a unique opportunity to join an expanding team and foster growth of VCU’s philanthropic efforts.
In this role you will:
- Serve as a planned giving subject matter expert and resource to front-line fundraisers on the MCV Campus
- Manage a portfolio of donors and prospective donors and meet with them to promote and secure planned gifts for the benefit of the MCV Campus
- Partner with gift officers to develop and execute strategies that increase planned giving among their prospects and donors
- Remain current on developments in the estate and gift planning field
- Prepare gift illustrations and proposals for planned gifts
- Collaborate with donor engagement and foundation partners to plan and execute a thoughtful stewardship program for legacy society members
- Support the Assistant Vice President of Gift Planning to execute a multi-faceted communications plan to grow the planned giving program on the MCV campus
- Partner with campus and foundation partners to identify MCV Campus planned giving donors to profile and feature in various print and digital media
- Partner with gift and records management to ensure planned gifts are accurately recorded, credited, and designated
- Engage, educate, and build relationships with professional advisors through events, newsletters, visits, and telephone calls as appropriate
- Track and monitor results of all gift planning activities on the MCV Campus

- Safeguard the confidentiality of constituent information and establish standards of ethics and confidentiality regarding the handling of donor and volunteer information and train colleagues to understand/implement these standards
Required qualifications/skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent experience
- Experience in the legal or accounting field, fund raising, marketing or related field in order to acquire skills necessary to develop and coordinate charitable gift plans to promote planned gifts to VCU by alumni, faculty and friends
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse professional environment or commitment to do so
- Ability to solve problems while effectively collaborating with stakeholders throughout a complex, matrix organization
- Ability to provide strategic guidance to leadership and campus partners on all aspects of planned giving
- Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills; superior judgment, negotiating skills and diplomacy
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Capable of managing multiple priorities while working strategically, collaboratively and inventively
- Commitment to the mission and strategic goals of VCU and VCU Health
Preferred hiring standards:
- JD, Certified Financial Planner, CPA or advanced degree in business, finance, or related field
- Previous experience in a gift planning development position or in a substantially related field such as financial planning or law
