About the Job:
The position is located at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), in the Office of Development and will be housed in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS). The person is responsible for successful major gift solicitation.
Responsibilities:
Major Gifts Development (80%)
• Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and its departments, and the development plans and strategies that pertain to the fundraising priorities.
• Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development, and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics.
• Build and manage a portfolio of major gift ($50,000 and above) prospects. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts.
• Initiate and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives.
• Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate UMF procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution.
• Complete, file, and maintain accurate, relevant, and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals.
• Partner and collaborate with the University of Minnesota Foundation, as necessary.
Oversee and Guide Development Activities for CAHSS (10%)
• In collaboration with the Dean, formulate and implement collegiate and departmental strategic development plans that meet UMD’s overall development objective.
• Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and staff and coordinate with them on department specific fundraising priorities as established by the Dean and Chief Development Officer.
Serve as a member of the UMD Development Team: (10%)
• Assist development leadership with major donor/campaign strategies and special projects as requested.
• Attend University and external functions as recommended. Serve on committees as appropriate.

This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various University and external functions. There will be occasional travel.
The minimum salary for the Gift Officer 97173A is $78,643.86.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• Minimum of three (3) years professional development experience with demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts and principal gifts; or related experience in marketing, sales, financial advising, public relations, or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation of individuals/businesses.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated success in working independently, but also collaboratively in a team setting. Ability to act as a leader, participant, and facilitator in a team setting.
• Demonstrated ability to independently develop and analyze alternative solutions and make recommendations; strategic thinker with ability to translate to operational objectives; ability to manage multiple priorities and exercise authority to meet goals.
• Solid relationship-building skills with a diverse constituency of individuals such as donors, faculty, strategic partners, volunteers, and University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) staff. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with groups across large organizations.
• Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including effective presentation skills.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and database familiarity.
• Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel for donor visits is required. This position also requires the ability to work evenings and weekends at various University functions, as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree.
• Three years or more experience in direct individual major gift solicitations of $100,000 or more.
• Professional development experience in higher education; demonstrated experience in donor/prospect cultivation and solicitation process, including use of volunteers.
• Knowledge of planned giving programs.
• Campaign experience.
This position is posted as a Gift Officer 97173A, but if an applicant has the required Bachelor's degree and five years of demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses, they may qualify for the higher level Gift Officer 97173B position.
About the Department
The Development Office is within the Chancellor's Unit. It builds relationships with UMD's stakeholders that may ultimately develop into financial support for the institution and provides critical resources to help fund strategic plan initiatives including scholarships, faculty development, academic programs, student services, facilities and co-curricular programming.
