PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Director, National Estate and Gift Planning is responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting prospects to secure meaningful legacy gifts. This specialized content expert maximizes charitable contributions through a deep understanding and application of appropriate, donor-aligned planned giving vehicles. This position will expand the planned gift prospect base by leveraging qualified leads identified through marketing in partnership with national, divisional and regional development staff. The Director will support strategic growth in the planned giving program in collaboration with the Senior Director and divisional/regional partners. You will be a trusted partner and resource for planned giving, both internally within ADL and externally to our donor/prospect constituency regarding planned gift strategies and all aspects of planned giving.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary
- Proactively and strategically manage a prospect portfolio and advance prospects through the qualification, cultivation and solicitation process by creating a customized strategy for each prospect in the portfolio.
- Apply expert technical knowledge of relevant tax, probate, trust, and financial/estate planning strategies to address individual donor needs and goals and prepare proposals and other supporting materials to enable creation and execution of planned gifts.
- Collaborate with and provide in service training to division and regional development staff to enrich knowledge of and enthusiasm for the solicitation of planned gifts including incorporating planned giving into their major gift fundraising efforts.
- Provide guidance to internal and external stakeholders regarding legacy giving informed by best practices, current trends and applicable laws and regulations.
- Adhere to best practices for moves management, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of donor contacts and ongoing communication with current donors and prospects via database and hard file notations.
- Meet portfolio goals including number of donor visits and meaningful, monthly personalized donor contacts.
- Participate in fostering a culture of philanthropy by promoting planned giving throughout the organization.
Secondary
- Cultivate relationships with attorneys, trust officers, accountants, financial planners and other estate planning professionals regarding gift opportunities for clients. Provide material for their use, exchange up-to-date information on current best practices, request help in obtaining referrals and discuss donor interests.
- Participate in special assignments or projects as representative of the National Estate and Gift Planning Department.
Travel
- Some travel is required (10-15%)
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills
- Expert technical knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and donor relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
- Ability to convey complicated concepts clearly and succinctly.
- Excellent organizational skills, creative thinker and the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Must be self-motivated, ability to take initiative and make independent decisions as well as work as part of a team.
- Experience working in a non-profit institution of comparable complexity and scale is preferred.
- Technologically savvy with an understanding of modern business systems, practices and processes.
- Comfort building relationships with and collaborating with colleagues remotely.

Experience
- Ten years of relevant professional experience in planned giving or related development/fundraising area.
- Proven success soliciting donors, with an outstanding record in closing legacy gifts.
- Strong knowledge and experience with simple bequests, annuities, beneficiary gifts and other complex gift planning vehicles.
